Discussion:
One schematic, multiple board versions ?

Hi,

I'm pretty new user and haven't fully got my head around some aspects of KiCAD, so please forgive what may be an FAQ.

I have a single schematic and wish to maintain two or three different PCB versions, single-sided, double-sided and SM. This is required by the lifecycle of this product as its developed.

Ideally I want a single .SCH and .NET file, with a .CMP and .PCB file for each version of the PCB. Each version of the footprints will reside in a common library file ('mylib' or something).

Would this configuration be supported directly by KiCAD, or will I have to workaround it some way ? I'd welcome any suggestions on the neatest way to achieve this.

Regards,
Andy McClements

Hi

You just need to maintain diferent filenames.
From teh singl schematica save as many net list as you need, at least 2,
one for SMD another for THD.
You will need the 2 netlists to hold the diferent footprints.
In PCBNew you just have to read the desired netlist (SMD or THD). Fos
single/double sided boards the diference is PCBNew only as the netlist can
be shared.

Thanks guys. I've tried branching the PCB into two versions, using the filenames, within the same single project 'folder' in the workspace.

This seems OK, but having edited and re-saved a semi-final version of a PCB, PCBnew seems to have forgotten its library configuration, when I add my library path back in, PCBnew prompts me to save a new Project (.PRO) file ? Is this right ? I'm concerned I'll get myself into a mess..

Hi

No you're not messing.
The project file has the list of used libraries.
So if you wnat to have separate sets of libraries for each Schematic or
PCB you need sparate project files.

But that don't mean you need separate schematics, its just another way
of doing what wa suggested before, have multiple projects sharing the same
schematic.

There is still another way, if you want to dive into hierarquical
schematic sheets, you can have a individual main schematic file for each
project. Those schematic sheets will have only one placeholder for a
hierarquical sheet. This hierarquical sheet has the shared schematic.
This way its a little more complex but makes it easier to share
schematics or parts of schematics and still make use of the default
associations (project/schematic/netlist/pcb) based on the name of the
project.

All you have to do is decide what is the setup that best fit your
specific needs.

Best regards
Jorge
