Thanks for info, however that is just a list of versions (with some comments). How does one actually get these test versions. Is there a secret download site, or do I need to contact the developer in person. IF the latter where do I obtain the e-mail address.

I've just tried this, Milan, and it was a lot quicker than the
Winbuilder route, thank you (I started Winbuilder yesterday, saw your
post this morning, and had your package downloaded and installed before
Winbuilder completed).

So far everything seems to work apart from when I try to read a net
list. I then get an error message:

Error loading netlist.
IO_ERROR: Unable to parse URL:
'${KGITHUB}/Air_Coils_SML_NEOSID.pretty'
from
C:\dev\kicad-winbuilder-3.4\src\kicad\pcbnew\github\github_plugin.c
pp: remote_get_zip():line507

The C:\dev... directory is presumably on your PC (it isn't on mine).

I thought perhaps I ought to change the KGITHUB variable, though I'm not
sure to what (https://github.com/kicad?), and more importantly I can't
work out how to change it. At the moment it is blank in the Path
Substitutions on the PCB Library Tables dialog, but there seems to be no
way of editing it.

Regards,

Robert.

Just realised it was an OS environment variable I had to set, and once
set it works. Not very intuitive, and the netlist import was horribly,
horribly slow. I guess I'll just have to delete all the entries in the
global library table that refer to github and stick to my own, locally
stored footprints.

Regards,

Robert.

Thanks Milan,
Downloaded and installed your build without any problems. However, one of your files seems to be infected with a trojan. Please, check out the attached screen shot.

Thanks Milan, I downloaded your version. It installed fine in Windows 8, 64bit. So far no issues except the old KiCAD icon on the desktop was no longer valid. I had to go to C:\kicad\bin\kicad.exe and create a desktop shortcut. Obviously not a problem, but might be nice to include in the install.

Thanks for all your hard work on this.

Milan is there a way to save (simple) boards as a .brd file. This would make it easier to work with old files and exchange them with others. Not all of us need 32 layers.

Two other things. I cannot find the equivalent of CvPcb (Components to modules) the button, is it absent. What am I missing.

Also while I have you, on both the old and your version I cannot figure out how to reduce a boards size/edges once it is partially laid out. How does one trim the edges.

Not in a recent version. To keep the BRD saving ability you have to keep the one of the newest stable version or some old from testing branch.

The CvPcb is still available, but it "has become a part" of Eeschema now. You can start CvPcb from Eeschema toolbar.

Thanks for the fast reply. I'm real disappointed that .brd's are no longer a save option. I am and will be posting a number of KiCAD S100 boards to users worldwide. Most still use the 2013 windows version. Not being able to use the "new" file format would be an issue. Unfortunately I will have to go back/stick with that version. Is it going to be a policy in the future to drop the .brd file format for final KiCAD versions. Would it not be possible to add a converter, Like for example Microsoft Word .doc and .docx files etc.

yes the .brd format is deprecated and will be no longer used.

this is because of the layer changes, it is impossible to convert a new
file back to the old format.

You should convert your projects to the new format.

As kicad is freely available, you can freely update your kicad
installations to the new version. Not exactly the same with word
versions you must pay to get the new one... And moreover, updating your
version you will get the new improvements and bugfixes.

oh hai

can I upgrade this centos 5 my customer is using?
It's just free software!

(seriously no, free software does not always mean freedom to upgrade :) )

Isn't that possible to translate a 'new kicad_pcb' file to a brd one by
discarding empty layers?
