Hi Folks,


I have just found/joined the group and am looking for some help already


I am building a video board for an Z80 based processor and will be using a V9958 VDP, this comes in a 64 pin shrink-DIP package and won't easily (although it can be "force-fit") mount on a 0.1" prototype board.


I am looking to create a small adapter board to break out a 64-pin SDIP socket to 0.1" hole spacing. Using the dimensions off a data sheet that I found, I have created a footprint that "looks" close to what is required, but I am not very confident that it is correct and I'd rather use a proven design before I send the board off to get made.


I did some "Googling", searching for an existing KiCad model without success, which was a bit of a surprise, I expected that other hobbyists might have had a need for a similar board and created a footprint.


So, I was wondering whether anyone here has a 64-pin SDIP footprint that they could share please. It would be even better if they had a matching 3D model too

HI,

thanks very much - that's perfect - and even better, it is exactly the same as my attempt, so I am encouraged that I seem to be able to make usable models!


I guess that as you have made this model, you must have used it and soldered the resultant board?


I was a bit concerned with mine (and your model is obviously the same) whether the very tight separation between the solder pads was too tight for hand soldering and thought about reducing the diameter of the solder pad slightly.


Did you find any difficulty when soldering the component to the PCB?

I didn't use this footprint yet.



If you plan to make the dual side PCB with platted holes in fab you can reduce the pads diameter a bit. Of course you have to keep the minimum annual ring.
If you plan to make the single side PCB (especially at home) the pads might be too small in X axis, and need to be enlarged.


About hand soldering. I'm very often soldering QFP64/48/100 with pitch less than 1mm by hand, so 1,78mm pitch isn't any challenge for me. ;-)

Hi,

thanks very much - I thought that I had imported it correctly into my board design, but I obviously made an error adding the model to the library.


When I try to add it in PCBnew, the file appears to be empty and I notice that the file format is very different to the model that I created (below). I am using KiCad PCBNew Build 2013-07-07 BZR 4022. Is your model file compatible with that Version of PCBNew?

My footprint might be incompatible with BZR4022-stable. I don't remember if this version can import PRETTY footprints in *.kicad_mod files. I no longer use this version.
It was made and exported by BZR4932-production. It is readable by BZR4416-testing, the last relatively stable PCBnew without FP-LIB-TABLE.

brilliant! - that one works great, the oval pads that you have used makes the clearances a bit bigger too, so while my version is not a million miles away, I think that your one will be better.
