Discussion:
Can I add custom fields & footprints to schematic library parts?

Hi All, forgive me I'm a KiCad novice, but have come from using other tools (Cadence Orcad & Allegro mostly).

My question is, can I create symbols in a schematic library with predefined fields? E.e. add a footprint name, manufacturer part number etc. - Ideally everything that is required for matching the symbols to footprints and all BOM info?

This tutorial seems to suggest it can be done: http://store.curiousinventor.com/guides/kicad/new_components

BUT in my version of KiCad (build 2012-01-19) if I click on the "Edit Component Properties" in the library editor for a part I create (or one opened from one of the standard libraries) I get "Options" "Description" "Alias" and "Footprint Filter" tabs and no more, I see no "Fields" tab as in the above tutorial.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance and thanks for a great piece of software!

James

for what you want to do you might use the "edit field properties" (or
whatever it is called in the English version :-)) button - the button
with the "T" right next to the "Component Properties" button in the menu
(at least for the 2012-01-04 version of KiCad).
